Fire Safety & Prevention

Smoke & CO Alarms

  • Install alarms on every level, inside and outside sleeping areas.
  • Test alarms monthly using the test button.
  • Replace batteries once a year (or when they chirp).
  • Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years.

Cooking Safety

  • Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling.
  • Keep anything that can burn away from the stovetop.
  • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
  • Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires.

Heating Safety

  • Keep everything at least 3 feet from space heaters.
  • Turn off space heaters when you leave the room.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually.
  • Never use an oven to heat your home.

Escape Planning

Have a plan. Practice it with everyone in your home twice a year.

  • Know two ways out of every room.
  • Pick an outside meeting place (tree, mailbox, etc.).
  • Once you are out, STAY OUT.
